Cool project. You have not deleted all of the effects on the FX-Mixer. Are they supposed to be part of how you wanted the instruments to sound? Are they considered part of the sound design? It would be easier to mix if I can just delete or reduce the effects here and there, specifically the reverbs.

Does anyone know how to use VST's as an effects plugin on LMMS? I have not been able to figure out how to do so and I want to use that far more advanced SPAN audio spectrum analyzer on some tracks.

For VST effects you do not actually use VeSTige.

Follow the instructions here: https://lmms.io/documentation/Working_with_VSTs_effects

Does anyone know how to u

Yeah I could tell it wasn't through Vestige. For awhile I thought it just wasn't possible. Thank you so much! I have some plugins I've been waiting to use that will take my projects to the next level!

One of the things that I'm really struggling with is to get my tracks sound good when I stream them from my SoundCloud. As you may already know, SoundCloud streams tracks at 128kbps. This affects sounds that are in the upper range of high frequencies (~10KHz). My hihats on SoundCloud sound awful and tinny compared to their .wav file versions.

With LMMS as my only tool, is there anything I can do mix-wise to get my hihats (and other high frequency sounds) sound good on SoundCloud's 128kbps? Or is this more of an encoding issue?

I consider them all part of the design, it was easier to simply "unmix" rather than sort through all the effects to try and figure out which ones were crucial vs not after a year of not working inside the project. It seems no one is up for the challenge

Edit: I say the first bit because a lot of the plugins have automated parameters that are not obvious without really digging into the project.

No one else, hehe. :P

I mixed this without the Bitrot FX plugin set, using studio reference headphones, and occasionally switching to laptop speakers and stepping back to check if things sound good in mono.

First of all, I had to tame the monstrosity of high energy this track had in its unmixed state. Here, there, and everywhere, I turned the VOL knobs left and pulled the faders down, until the master clipping got reduced significantly. Once at more manageable levels I decided to tackle the whole thing based on four mixing principles: volume, panning, EQ, compression.

I spent some time experimenting with different volume and panning configurations, keeping in mind a few basic guidelines, such as putting kick and bass in the center, making the lead/melody to stand out, etc. There were a few stabs and one-shots that I didn't really care for. I tried to give them a spot in the stereo spectrum, but some of them just seem to clash with or disappear among all the other things that crowd the mix.

I connected a few instruments to the sidechain controller. The "pumping" sound isn't all that great, but it does help to create some space for the kick (and bass) to sound through.

After some more VOL and PAN adjustments, the many different sounds were still stuggling for space. This is where EQ comes in. Using C*Eq2x2, I shelved out most of the frequencies below 30Hz and above 16KHz, and tried to give each instrument some private EQ space. This was probably the most challenging aspect. There are many options available, many choices one can make with EQ.

After applying EQ I went back to make some panning adjustments. I also added some reverb with C*Plate2x2 to fill up the stereo spectrum.

Lastly, I used a compressor and limiter on the master to bring everything together. Nothing heavy, just some light final touches. The end result sounds wildly different from REKT's initial mix.

Comments? Thoughts?

Also, if anyone is interested in keeping this topic ongoing, please provide a project that is suitable for mixing. Keep it small and short. :)

If each user is providing, projects to mix, then why don't you guys make a new topic for each mixing project? :)
That way, it'll make it easier for users mixing a certain project, to find info and advice, related to that project that they are mixing.

Because say for example: If there are 4 users providing different projects to mix, then it will be confusing when people try to read the comments in one Topic, pertaining to a particular project, that they mixed.
In other words, comments on each project, will end up being all jumbled up into one topic, causing confusion. :P
And even a DAW like Lmms can't solve that problem. Heh. :)

Suggestion:
If Gps makes a project to mix, then Gps should make a new topic that discusses only his mixing project.
So people mixing Gps' project, will find all info related to Gps' mixing project, in the Gps' mixing topic.

If musikbear makes a project to mix, then muskbear should make a new topic that pertains only to that project.
So people mixing musikbears project, will find all info in the musikbear mixing topic.

If Brandy makes a project to mix,.............well you all get the point.

Excellent idea. I'm going to start a new "Mix Things Up" thread to try this out.

Thats fine, but leave some time to respond. Imo at least a week before the 'results' rolls in. (not sure i have time )
