A few queries

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!
Hi

Just started using LMMS and really like it. I have alot of ideas but it's putting them into reality that i struggle with. I also dont know all of the terminology so apologies if my queries have been answered before or that i'm giving poor descriptions. Anyway, i have a few queries:

Firstly, how can i get a smooth transition between notes of a melody. So it doesn't sound like a new note has just kicked in, but goes up and down 'seamlessly'.

Secondly, is there any way of adding effects to notes. Either echo or 'bending' notes like on guitar?

And finally (for now). Is there any way of installing plugins from the plugin browser? I'm generally struggling to install any plugin.

Your help to any or all of the above would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Ok so what you want to do here is open up the instrument and go to the tab entitled "ENV/LFO" Here you want to adjust the attack and release knobs. This adjusts how long it takes for the note to reach full volume and how long it takes to cut out. The attack you'll only need to adjust slightly or it will begin to sound like a sweeping type instrument (unless that's what you want).

Yes this is very easy, just open up the instrument you want to add the effects onto and select the FX tab. Then just click "Add effect" and browse through the vast collection of effects

If you're on Linux you can just go to the synaptic package manager and search for "LADSPA" and install everything :D Hope that helped...

You want to do slides or portamento-type things. The native instrument LB-32 or whatever it's called has built-in portamento which you can enable, but it's of course a monosynth so only plays one note at a time, no chords available.

You can also do slides on any notes. When in piano roll, select the graph-looking tool, and click on a note. This opens the automation editor, where you can edit the curve of the frequency of the note, an upward curve makes a slide up and downward curve a slide down. Experiment with that.

Bending, see above.

Echo can be made in many different ways. A rudimentary echo can be made by adding subsequent notes that get gradually quieter. You control the volume of notes from the small sliders at the lower edge.

Or you can add an echo effect on the instrument, and automate it so it's off most of the time, but switches on at the time of the note. You can automate the w/d knob in the front panel of the effect, this controls the ratio between the wet/dry signals, ie. signals with/without the effect. Refer to the LMMS manual on how to do automations.

No. You don't need to install plugins. You can use any VST instrument or VST effect on your computer (almost any - not all work well with LMMS, it's trial and error to find out which, mostly). To use VST instruments, just add the Vestige instrument on your track, in it's gui there's a button to load a VST instrument. Load any VST instrument to it and you can use it in your song.

VST effects are a bit trickier, you have to install them to a certain directory, then set that directory in the preferences.
