LMMS Sharing Platform Ratings

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!
so, ummmm.. yeah !! we want like button in place of stars. :D
Nooooo! We want ratings! :o :D :D

Actually both wouldn't be such a bad idea. I definitely agree a like button would be nice just to indicate you like it, and then you give a rating to give your opinion on how professional it is.

As I mentioned in that thread in LSP:

"This current 1-5 star rating system doesn't sort the project accurately and fairly..
If you sort them with ratings, it first shows you All songs with 100%(top number of votes), then 100%(lesser number of votes), then lesser %age(top number of votes), then lesser %age(lesser number of votes). and so on.. in each%age category it arranges songs in order of 'date of submission'.
Suppose there are 4 songs.. A, B, C & D.. A is top song with 100%(10 votes) and after that there are 5 more songs with same rating. now B is the 7th song with 100%(9 votes), ,C is 8th song with 100%(9votes) And D is at 27th position with 98%(11 votes). Though B and C have same ratings but B got higher place just because he submitted his song prior to C. Is it fair?? NO !! Now suppose D is jealous of A because A commented something on D's song which D didn't like. Now D rated Top song of A with 4 stars making his new rating as 98%(11 votes). Now what happens?? A's position falls back to 27th position because A was submitted after D. All songs which were at 2-27 rise one position higher including D which is now at 26 position."
This is unfair.. :(

but if we sort them according to the number of likes, Top projects will be more accurate.

Anyhow, it's a nice Idea to have both of them. but IMO sorting by likes is a better option. if two projects have same no of likes, then the project with more number of stars should be placed at a higher place. :)

Thanks for reading this loooong reply.

you said

but that will turn lmms into just what you like, not what is good. Should we rate best songs by likes? No, we RATE songs by RATINGS. ;)

The more people who rate, the more accurate it will be.

You'd think so, but no.

no, no that chart u showed stands only when there are max 10 people who regularly rate. And when people rate inaccurately.

Here's what I think:

5 * - Professional - I would buy this song or expect to hear it on the radio. It is the correct length, and fits the category.
4 * - Excellent - Near professional, but is not ready for release due to minor flaws and possibly incorrect length.
3 * - Good - Near perfection, but lacks professionalism that would make it a hit
2 * - Acceptable - Organized, but still contains minor flaws
1 * - Needs work - 1 star is also given to songs that are inaudible or have samples you have to download ( ok, I made that last one up  ) :D

If people don't rate like this, and not many people do rate at all, the system is inaccurate and needs to be changed.

Let me tell you an example. I used to be part of this gaming site. Part of the site functionality was, that players could give each other ratings for skill, sportsmanship, behaviour etc. There were thousands of players on that site and many players accumulated ratings in the hundreds.

And what happened was, that most people always gave either a 5 or 1. 5 was considered the normal, giving anything less was almost like an insult, whereas 1 was given only when there had clearly been a problem with the other player (dropped out of the game midway, behaved badly in chat, etc.)

What this lead to was that the average rating for a decent player was 4.8, maybe 4.7. 4.5 was already considered a bad average, and 4.2 was a horrible one... many people didn't accept anyone with ratings below 4.6 to tournaments because you could expect them to cause problems.

Anyone with less than a 4.0 average was extremely rare, and it would take some pretty "amazing" character to even pull that off. Most of those people would get permabanned from the site eventually, one way or another.
And when people rate inaccurately.
Well, but that's just it - that's what people do. It's just human nature. People rate inaccurately in situations like this - especially when others can see who left the rating, but even if they can't, it's usual that people just give a good rating because they don't want to offend.

You can say "this system works perfectly as long as everyone plays by these rules", but, you can say that about any system. If we all agree never to commit any crimes, then we can abolish the police...
Ah. I take it you're not much into socialism then ;)
And at the political world?

If it doesn't work well with ratings how does it work with likes?

I guess it doesn't work for gaming.
But we're musicians. We are artists. we aren't trying to win.

And I want you to give me your honest opinions on my songs, so if I deserve a 3 you give me a 3 :)

Think artists are some kind of higher breed of people, impervious to the follies of mankind?
