PLEASE!! Add knob/slider/etc. recording for automation

I searched the forum before posting this, and found only one thread specifically mentioning this -- and that was from 4 years ago. Instead of dredging that back up, I've decided to post this here in the wish list. 8-)
While the automation editor is nice and all, the lack of ability to directly record knob movements while the song is playing destroys any performance spontaneity. Drawing control points is no substitute for actually moving the knobs.
Ideally this would be implemented as both MIDI controllable (external MIDI controller, or internally routed MIDI like with a joystick etc.) AND simply moving the knobs with the mouse within the interface.

I'm sure I don't need to explicate further about how incredibly useful this would be. It would work SO much smoother than the current hand-edited method of automation. Not to mention the base essentials of recording pitch-wheel and mod-wheel movements. :!:

Pretty please? With sugar on top!!
