VeSTige does not load Plugins

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
Hi,
I've tried using VST plugins, but everytime I try to load one in VeSTige, I get this error message:
The VST-plugin whatever.dll could not be loaded for some reason.
If it runs with other VST-software under Linux, please contact an LMMS-developer!
I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 64bit using lmms 1.0.0.
What plugins are you trying to load?
Sorry for not replying, holidays.

I've tried loading gsnap, dsk acoustic guitars, and one instrument called chinese mini dizi that someone recommended in a tutorial. I've also tried several others but I've already deleted those and forgotten their names.
Could someone maybe recommend a (free) plugin that really should work so that I can try again?
Cheers!
Could someone maybe recommend a (free) plugin.....
in general Synth1 is regarded as the standard synth.
If Synth1 works, you installation works with vst
But any of the vst's in the wiki section
http://lmms.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Tested_VSTs
could be chosen
-And a lot more do works in lmms
Hi, zhao-nan!

I've tested non-free plugins such as Korg LE M1, Broomstick Bass, ManyBass, Cakewalk Studio Instruments, Kontakt 5, also I found pretty bunch of old analog synthesizers emulators.

Some of these did not work. For example, Broomstick Bass and ManyBass. For testing I used also windows free ModPlug Tracker - http://openmpt.org/ as VST station. It works good in Wine. If your plugin can work in Wine, it will work identical in LMMS and in OpenMPT.

Having read your message, I downloaded all plugs that you've enumerated. Only GSnap for x64 did not work. Others work good in LMMS and in OpenMPT.

I don't know about your linux system, but when I've begun to work with VSTi in my OpenSUSE 11.4, I had to install ALL PACKAGES relative to Wine. Both 64-bit and 32-bit. Of course, maximally up to dated. Check your Wine configuration.

And some more words. I needed a good bass plugin. In Windows I use Broomstick Bass, but it doesn't work in Wine. I've tested ManyBass - it doesn't work in Wine too. I thought it's because of it's 32-bitness. And converted it to 64-bit version using JBridge. New version doesn't work too. Other plugins (even working good) converted by JBridge also looses it's functionality.
This is screenshot of my YaST package manager with selection of Wine related packages. q4wine is not nesessary, of course, but you need others to be able to work with VST

I tried synth1 and several others from that list already, but it's always the same error.
I think some error with wine is my best guess..
These are the wine packages that are currently installed. Looks fine to me, but I've never used wine so I'm not sure.

You haven't install 32-bit devel-pack for Wine (in my universe wine-devel-32bit, in yours it maybe wine1.6-i386-dev )

I've find out that 64-bit plugins work very bad in Wine on my 64-bit system. I don't remember if at least one started. But 32-bit VSTs work perfectly.

Wine-devel contains some stuff for developping application and maybe it has something for running DLLs like VST plugins. Try to install 32-bit devel-pack for Wine.

But it's really amazing - Ubuntu is good stable linux, Wine traditionally runs lots of Windows programs and DLLs... Maybe it's trouble of your version of LMMS? Try to check the same plugins with any Windows DAW, working in Wine (OpenMPT, FL Studio). If they don't work - it's the problem of Wine. If plugins work in OpenMPT but dont work in LMMS - it's the problem of LMMS. So I think...

Sorry, I missed this before.

The LMMS package in the Ubuntu 14.04 repos is horribly broken beyond repair. We've tried to get it replaced with a working version but it's up to the Ubuntu maintainers now. Nothing the LMMS devs can do about it... we even already have a replacement package ready, it's even already in the 14.10 repos, just a matter of copying it to 14.04, but nothing is happening on their end... however, maybe if enough people demand action from the Ubuntu staff, they could be convinced to replace the package ;)

Meanwhile, your best bet is to install LMMS from a PPA. Such as this: https://launchpad.net/~irie/+archive/lmms
