Settings/scales questions

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
I was using LMMS 0.4.5 (which I think is great btw) on an XP box. I uninstalled it & deleted the folder in Program Files. The folder C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\lmms is still there. (The .cfg file is there.) I installed LMMS 1.0.3 and when I click Edit > Settings, the pgm crashes [Not Responding] & I have to click End Program [end now] to close it. Can anyone tell me what's wrong & how to fix this please? It works, and even remembers where my soundfont is but I think I'll need settings.

While I'm here, in the piano roll, I can select a Chord from the list & then click on a note & the chord appears. If I select a scale, and click a note, only the note appears, no scale. I can't find anywhere (the online manual, etc.) to tell me how to get a scale. Can someone please help?

Thanks,
Brad
Rename

Code: Select all

%userprofile%\.lmmsrc.xml
and see if the settings dialog works.

Keep the old file around so we can open a bug report with it.

In terms of chords, et. al, I'll let someone else chime in.
Unfortunately renaming that file didn't work. The pgm didn't even fully load, it just hung & I had to terminate it myself in processes in the task manager. I appreciate the suggestion tho.
Any other ideas? :/

BTW (if someone does this) you can't rename a file with a leading period in windows explorer. It gives an error saying you must give a file name. I had to use cmd.

wooot that issue again.. its so weird, It came up on github yesterday, and i found a 'fix' for it. A least it worked for Poul

a template of that 'dot' file
https://www.sendspace.com/file/p3c2bh
But why you do not get a new one automatically, i have NO idear. I actually test deleted that config, and lmms nicely, and no nonsence recreated it on its own -had to fill all again ofcause( if i diddent had a copy ;P ..))
So im courios -
Is your xp 'legit'?
what sevicepack do you have ?

let me know if you get it to work :)
The scale stuff - we can take that when lmms work:D
So, it seems I'm not the only one that this has happened to.

You mean to say that I need a dot file to get settings to work? (Is that a Document Template file?) Where would I put this?
I wonder if I deleted the xml AND the cfg files from their folders and re-installed lmms 1.0.3, if it wouldn't just create those files (as you seem to suggest) and then settings would work. They have: <lmms version="1.0.3"> in them! But they also know where my v 0.4.5 soundfont was and what recent files I opened in v 0.4.5! :!:

As of now, if I needed to use a different soundfont or increase my buffer I'd edit the xml file myself. I wonder tho, would that work? :?
FYI my XP is cool, although is has SP2 I never saw the need to get SP3.

Thanks - Brad

PS  I figured out that the scale setting in piano roll is for display and (I guess) is just there to "mark" the scale to show where the notes go. (Rt-clk on keys.) Unless it also does something else...
I dont know if it could be a sp related problem, but 'no need' to install a major update security, -and everyting else wise.. (?!)
Yes the file i send you is an empty config template. You need to change the version to your current version, and then replace it with the one you have in:

Code: Select all

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\lmms
I sugest you study and then move the one you have there already, and then exchange it for the one i send you. Hopefully that will fix your issue (it did for the other guy), and lmms should start, asking you to fill in the settings in the setting dialog

Scales - yes, they visualizises the notes that are part of chosen scale, and most important! In the KEY that you draw the context menu on!!!
So if you wnat to compose in F-minor, you chose 'minor' in the scale-dropdown, and then right-click any 'F' on the keyboard, and in that context menu, chose 'Mark current scale'. The colored notrs will be notes of the F-minor scale.
I tried your idea as suggested and first of all, when I went to D/L your "fix" file, chrome couldn't get onto the page. It hit me with a blown cert & not the website error. This is (unfortunately) a common occurrence when using chrome - it does this with soundcloud.com and other sites too. So I used my copy of firefox to go to sendspace.com to D/L your "fix" and I got hit with this:

I'm not sure if its a false positive or not. Just how confident are we that sendspace.com is a trustworthy site? I gather that your file is legit. :/ Norton says the site is safe.

I then replaced the xml file that was there with your template after changing the version to 1.0.3 like my lmms. I'm sad to announce :( , that it did not work and although the pgm loads, clicking edit > settings makes it crash & I must click 'end program'. I even tried making the buffer that same size I had it in my xml file.

I want to make one thing clear tho - it may be important. The xml file is located in:
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator
not in ..\lmms
That folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\lmms
has a file called: .zynaddsubfxXML.cfg which has ZynAddSubFX-data. Its set up almost like a xml file, but with different parameters.

Maybe you (someone) can try one last time to help me. I guess that if I changed a parm in the xml file, ex. buffer size (from 256 to around 6000 like you had it) it would work that way in lmms, right? (This way I could bypass 'settings' and edit them w/o using edit > settings.)

 Brad

PS Just FYI, there's still a registry folder named lmms 0.4.5 - name: order - type: reg_binary - data: [a long string of 2 digit numbers]. I don't know if this in addition to the above means anything, but I thought I'd disclose.
I still wonder if I delete everything that has lmms & re-install, would it maybe work? Whadda-ya-think?
first of -damn.. i thought a template of that file could fix it.
Secondly- the virus-scare is propl because its a dot-file, but virus-scares are weird sometimes. I get one if i compile and block a flow-update of an open file - That is ofcause pure nonsence, but it happens :p
Gues 'they' kind of think 'better one to many, than miss one' but its an annucense
Back to you files
0.4.5 is definately not suposed to be there! That from my folder structure
Do you know pastebin
http://pastebin.com/
It let peeps display and work with code online
I will put the file there, and you should be able to copy it.
Go in there and PASTE YOUR version!
Paste it, and copy the link to this thread, then i will take a look, a try to write one that works.

Deleting everything -? -it should, but lets try the pastebin stuf first
And .lmmsrc.xml is not surposed to be in the folder 'lmms', so nothing wrong there
@musikBear please use Gist instead of adware polluted sites.

https://gist.github.com/

These are the misleading buttons people see when they click your links. All of these download buttons lead to potentially dangerous places. The actual download link is circled in blue.

Also, use imgur for images. It's much less adprone than the services you have been using.
@tresf that is a good point and I did notice that when I D/Led his file. I did click the proper D/L link but I got that message anyway. You have been using imgur to U/L & reference your images; I use flickr, which is part of Yahoo. You can make images private & put them in a comment like I did above.
I know you're saying to use gist instead of sendspace like he had, but what about pastebin? Are you also saying not to use pastebin & to use gist instead?

@musikbear I think tresf has issues with pastebin (I know he does with sendspace). I'd like to see if he answers my questions. Would it not be easier for me to send the file directly to you by a one-time email address (I don't think you can PM or U/L on this forum) or use gist.github.com like tresf suggests?

I'm just asking, if pastebin is the way to go that's okay. I really DO want to get this worked out! I'd rather not have trouble with my computer that could've been prevented, that's all.

thanks guys - I'll proceed asap...
