On LMMS, whenever I try to load a VST, the entire software doesn't respond.

This depends on the vst you are trying

I always recommend the stunningly good Synth1 as kind of 'proff of concept'

If you go trough these guide-lines, and still have problems after that, do post again

I might add that I re-wrote and clarified a lot of the page Musikbear linked.

Perhaps since it is a wiki, we just link to it instead of try to figure out who wrote what
