What operating system ? How did you rename the project ? In LMMS or in something like File Explorer ? What EXACTLY was the original file name ? And what EXACTLY did you change it to ?

I'm going to guess maybe you're on Windows and in renaming the file you've lost the .mmp/.mmpz extension on the end of the file name so LMMS no longer thinks it's a project file.

Welcome to the forum!
Yes Steve is correct. If you remember the name of your project, browse to it in win-explorer. right-click it and add a dot + mmpz
like
myFirstProjet.mmpz
After that double-click on the file, and your project should open in lmms
Btw
This 'problem' has nothing to do with lmms, but is caused by windows. I recommend that you in folder options for windows, choose 'Show file extensions'
