Frequent crashes when using VSTs

LMMS looks great, and I really want to use it more. But every time I try to use a VST, the program crashes within minutes (sometimes seconds). I have no idea what cuases these crashes as they mostly seem spontaneous, however something that always causes the program to crash is changing the preset (this is true for both Sylenth1 and Helm).

I have used three VSTs so far and they all have this problem (Helm, Dexed and the Sylenth1 demo).

Sometimes I can use it (just avoiding the presets) and it will be fine, but sometimes it will crash really quickly.

Any ideas why?

If it helps, I'm using an A10 5800K,GTX 750 Ti and 8GB of DDR3 memory.

There's a list of VSTs known to work with LMMS at https://lmms.io/documentation/Tested_VSTs

None of those are on it so I'm afraid it's not a big surprise that they may not work. LMMS is notorious fussy about what VSTs it will run successfully.

Steve linked you to the 'good' list, and i will suggest that you dl and install Synth1
It is a dream of a synth, and it is very good and cpu-lean in lmms
Furthermore you can find ~mio of finished instruments-presets online

Nahh not imo. Lmms will support much more VSTs than those that will cause problems. Thats why there also is a no-go-list

Its a fairly short list, but admitted, some of the absolute most famous VSTs are on it (Crystal Kontakt Grace)
So what about the ones you have had issues with? Well, they are demos I believe image-line has added a time-of-use limmiter to the demos, and i think thats where you have the crash. I also think this is mentioned in the eula for the demos? I have tried Toxic and it runs like a dream for 1½ min, then it freeze. I wonder if thats not the case with their other demos too?
But in one respect Steve is sadly correct: VSTs-effects
Where it for instruments are most work, it is most fail for effects.

Still my latest track has at least 6 synth1 tracks, and the fact that I am on Linux does not help either with vst.
It does surprise me how well most vst do work even on Linux were wine is used to fool the vst into thinking it runs on windows.

Yes, i would say that those problem are most likely linux-Vst problems.
In general i have started tom get annoyed with linux. The problem is that there are too many darn versions and subforms of linux, and even though lmms runs just perfect on linux (i believe a test had 50 ..fifty! Synth1 running at the same time with next to no cpu strain, but ok, he has a 8 core monster..!) the kind of problems that appear with various linux versions, and not to forget the packs build by various pac-mans, where some almost as if they meant to cause grief, always omit Vestige, and or support for wine, darm annoying :/

I am quite happy with lmms on Linux. My cpu is an amd phenom II X4 at 3.2 ghz , and I still have to see a project that even comes close to 50% of my cpu power.

I use openSUSE, and when I had a problem with LMMS, I contacted the package builders for openSUSE.
It got fixed rather fast, and since then I do not have a problem with lmms anymore.

Most people will however prob not know who to contact, and then come to this forum, instead of a forum for their specific distro.

I think I'll stick to Windows, I've never had any problems with Synth1, it's wonderfully stable even when I have 10 or more instances in a project.

BTW musikbear, can you add Dexed and also Ragnarok to your "Not working" list ? They both have real problems with their preset management in LMMS (and they're both favourites of mine). Synth1 is great but you can't really use it for everything.

Yes, i will do that.

so if WE told the ubunto-pac-man, to include Vestige and wine, a lot of issues would be avoided? -Thats interesting, i think i will give that a go..

Or maybe some one with better google skills then me, can find who makes the lmms package for Ubuntu,
