This forum has multitude of just that. One of the threads -maby especially :

But it describe one user going from not knowing a lot about music, to being a composer.
LOTS of good advise in the thread, so instead of repeating, i will recommend you to read the thread.

A breakup? Make a track!
A trip to the end of the world? Make a track!
Has your boss fired you? Make a track!
This vanilla ice cream was tasty? Make a track!
Did you make a good track? Make a track?
Do you hate me? Make a track?
Did your dog shit in the grass? WTF and make a track!

Your mental and emotional state can strongly impact your compositions

One trick I use sometimes, which works most of the time, is to take a synth sound and just
press keys/notes and play around with them, until you hear something good.
If you hear something good, try to complete it, or add in more to the melody you made.

Trying to explain the art of composing, is not always easy. And there is so much, that can be said.
