I just finished up my new track, and when I go to click the export icon in the top-right corner, I get an error message saying this:
"This project is empty so exporting makes no sense. Please put some items into Song Editor first!"

But my project is not empty. I've even opened the .lmms file from my desktop into LMMS just to make sure it's not empty. What's going on?

In the Song Editor there are tracks. One of them is the Beat/Bassline and this is the one you've used to create a beat. Click in the black area to the right to enter your beat into the song.

No no the .lmmsrc.xml is not your project!
It is called the 'dot-file' and is the file where all your settings are kept.
Dont mess with that file, unless you know the language xml.

When you say 'not-empty' then this is where you need to understand what zonkmachine means.
The window with the song-editor needs to have content!
The easiest thing for you is to watch one of the many guides on using lmms for the first time.
