Okay. Two important questions.

Did you put the vst's, in the Lmms vst plugin folder?

And could you tell us, the name of the vst effects, that you downloaded?

What do you mean by 'effects' are they plugins -eg VSTs like Brandy ask, or are they indeed sound-files with recorded effects?

If they are VSTs, its a sad fact, that most VSTs effects, does not work in lmms. Its being worked at.
However all BlueCat Suite VSTs now does work in RC5, and they are excellent effects!

If not solved
please post your:
* OS (+service-pack-version)
* lmms version
* hardware specification (ram & soundcard is the most important)
* names and best download links of the failing vst's

yes they are in lmms/plugins/ladspa

its the eq NyquistEq5

i use windows, 1.2 rc5, ram 8gb nvidia virtual audio device, name NyquistEq5

yes they are in lmms/plugins/ladspa

its the eq NyquistEq5

Thats not the right folder for vst. Unless you set the vst folder the same as the ladspa plugin folder.

Gps is right.
The ladspa folder is not the folder, to put those 3rd party plugins in.
You have to put the NyquistEq5, and those 3rd party vst plugins, into
Lmms' vst plugins folder.

Or, you could make a new folder, to put your vst plugins into and then
direct the file path, to that vst folder.

You should be good to go, when you move the vst-dll's to the VST-folder, defined in your settings :
