Should I use the kicker section in presets? Zynsubaddeffects? Or the drums and drumsynth from the samples? And it seems like I can't change the tone for drums using the kicker? Should I just not use the kicker if I want to possibly change tones?

Okay. My advice is, to use whichever drum sound, sounds good for your music track.

It is possible to synthesize percussive sounds with all LMMS synths as well as with any sample.
The Kicker allows you to change the tone.

You can clearly hear the effect of both, then experiment with
Freq.Slope
