how do you add custom effects to a VST?

To add effect TO any VST preset, you do exactly as with native LMMS-instruments: Add the effect on the FX-tab
But i think you ask how to add VST-effects to LMMS ?

i could not get LMMS to show my dowloaded effects after i selected add effects in the menu, i watched a video and you have to open settings on LMMS select the folder and go to the VST plugins selection and select the folder where your plugins are located and LMMS will pull them up when you select add effects on a VST plugin you have downloaded
