I will admit I am not as cool as other users of this product. but how do you record from an external source? I want to record myself playing the guitar to leave behind. so any help you have would be welcome.

Hello and welcome.

Lmms does not do that audio recording/editing feature... it s planned but we dont know when.

If you want that feature you should either buy for a pay daw as ableton live or fl studio.

Or you may give ardour a try.

As said, LMMS does not yet have sound-recording, but that does not mean you cant use recordings!
Download Audacity
It is free, solid and well maintained
We dont hesitate to recommend it :
http://www.audacityteam.org/download/
Then record your Guitar.
Save as default wave or ogg, and the Import that recording into a LMMS Sample-track
That will be just as if you had recorded directly into LMMS
