using vestige, no VSTs load.
i don't get an error, nothing crashes, it just brings me back to vestige with "No VST Plugin Loaded", as though i had simply closed the file dialogue out.

is this a common problem?
which version of LMMS should I roll back to?

No. Vestige works out of the box for all releases since way back on windows as low as xp
So your issue must be in Edit| Settings since you get a 'no vst loaded' popup
Check you settings. Thee dll of the vst you want to use, must be in the folder defined for VST
But to test if VST works at all You should try MDA-Piano http://mda.smartelectronix.com/synths.htm
It is very small in size, and you can just copy its dll to your VST-folder. Further its a quite good piano-instrument, so it is a win win
