music effects thing

is there an effect that makes it sound like the instrument is being played by a marching band or something? like a large number of people playing at once.
The way i understand this "like being played by a marching band ", is if you want to make the sound move up and down a 'field' from left to right.
And -Yes that is doable.
I wont explain how to do that, before you confirm, that it is in fact that effect you want :p
