Song editor has no sound even though samples play sound

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
Hi!! Hope everyone is doing okay during these rough times. :)

I recently downloaded LMMS and started to play around with it, however I'm having an issue with the sound and can't make any tracks. When I click on a sample or a sound/instrument in the sidebar, it previews a sound that I can hear, but when I click on the notes in the song editor, no sound plays when I press play. Even if I click and drag a sample, it shows up as an added sound to the editor, but no notes play.

I have used the troubleshooter on the official website and have browsed the forums and didn't find any questions similar to mine. My sound drivers are clearly working as I can hear the previews, but the melodies I try to create simply don't play.

Any suggestions? Am I missing a step in creating the actual note?

Thanks! :)
ps: I have a picture but I don't know how to add it in the post box
Hi, welcome to the forums! To add a photo on this forum, you have to either add it as an attachment, or upload it somewhere else and add it using the img bbcode tags.

I noticed that you mentioned song editor a few times, but not piano roll. The piano roll is where notes are placed. If you are using the piano roll, how are you getting to it? The correct way is to click somewhere on a track's timeline in the song editor, then double click the clip that appears (it is called a TCO, or track container object). It then opens a piano roll for that TCO where you can add the notes. You can play from the song editor or the piano roll, but you'll need notes in a TCO for LMMS to play sounds in the song editor view.

Cubician has recently restarted his excellent tutorial series on LMMS, and has a video that can explain through video better than I can via words :D

I believe its quite simple
If you are on a windows pc, you need to select SDL as device
Read: https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=LM ... o_Settings
If that does not fix it
please post your:
* Name of your Operative System (Windows/ Linux/ Mac) And subtype (Home' 'Mint' '10.13' aso)
* lmms version, and the site where you got it from
* lmms sound device chosen
https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=LM ... o_Settings
* hardware specification (ram & soundcard is the most important)
* Buffer-size Latency setting
https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=LM ... l_Settings
If the issue are with default content:
* lmms instrument involved
* lmms preset (if a factory preset is used)

For basics perhaps also my rookie-guide can be of help -Link below :)

That video was super helpful thank you!
The problem was that I wasn't using the piano roll...I thought the sound editor WAS the piano roll LOL :lol:
Also thanks for explaining the image attachments!
