The LMMS was just installed on my laptop running Windows 7. A midi file was downloaded and when double clicked the Windows media player begins playing it through the speaker. The speaker works.
LMSS is started a new project created and the MIDI file imported. I cannot get it to make any sounds. I have tried to set the option for the speaker but no luck. What are the basic steps need to play though the laptop speaker?

Click edit -> Settings -> click the speaker.
Backend options are: MME, Windows DirectSound, Windows WASAPI, Windows WDM-KS.
Select: BACKEND: Windows DirectSound, and DEVICE Speakers( SigmaTel C-Major Audio)
I save and restart. No sound.
What can I do to get this to play the song?

and can get sounds from the player so it is fundamentally working.
What is needed to make it play the midi file?

Try setting sound to SDL not PortAudio. Works for me.

Do you have a GM soundfont (.sf2) installed with its location specified in Settings/Paths/Default Soundfont File ?

You could after the import of the midi file, try to change the instruments, if then you have sound, the problem is what splistick mentioned.
