MP3 not supported?

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
I'm having a hard time understanding why MP3 format files are not supported. One of my best friends would like me to remix a song he made, and he sent the file in MP3, I did a touch of research on your program and found that MP3 isn't supported. I really like this program, it's one of my favorite free music editing softwares. I attempted to change the file to a .wav and it allowed me to put the song into a track, but no sound came from it. Was it because it was originally an MP3? Please help! :(
A wav file should work, it should not matter it was an mp3 before, although you will loose some quality.
it allowed me to put the song into a track, but no sound came from it.
That is odd, does the new wave play in media-player?

No, that should have no baring at all.

Lmms does not support mp3, because of very high prized licensees for encoding.
Instead lmms support the free alternative ogg.forbis. It actually compress better than mp3, but does not have wide-spread usage:(
One player that handle ogg files is the VLC-player

Another free alternative, to expensive or add-loaded media players
Recommended.

How did you convert it to a .wav ?
I converted it by simply changing the name, I didn't use a program or software to change the format. It did in fact play when I used the media player, and everything seemed in order. But as I said, when I added it to the track, no sound came. I also tried changing it to a .ogg file, yet it still didn't play. :(
The reason it worked in Media Player is that most software don't actually go after file ending when deciding what kind of file your giving it, but they read the beginning of the file that contains a header telling the world what it is. You need to actually use some software to convert the .mp3 to .wav.
I don't know what people use for this but I'm sure there is freeware around for this.
I would like to add that you quite often come across files that you actually can 'convert' just by changing the ending but this doesn't apply to any sound file I know of.
ehrrr..
come across files that you actually can 'convert' just by changing the ending
..can you name one
I think you perhaps have simple text-files in ascii format in mind, but they are not really 'file-formats'
A formatted file has a header, that uniquely identifies it as a special file-type, and the mp3 is in no way comparable to either ogg or wave
You can find a lot of programs that will convert between different sound formats
I recommend Audacity

Free and versatile.
You import mp3, and they are exportable as wave
I believe at pr default, if not let me know, then a solution can be found

uhoh one cravat
Do not ever import loss-formats as mp3 / ogg, and convert them to wave, if it is not absolutely the only thing to do
The wavefile will be of less quality, than an orr. wavefile with same data, and obviously, this will only get worse if you do it several times
eg:
lossy -> loss-less: Baaaad -and the output can be HUGE!

Nope, not going there... Please note the ' ' I cunningly used around the word convert. :)
Hey, you can also convert mp3s to ogg, which I prefer to use, using this online converter.
