How to change the frequency of a vst instrument?

How do i change the frequency of a vst plugin, at a specific point within the song? It wont let me connect the frequency slider in the plugin's instrument window, to the automation track.

Click the spanner button, it should open a tray with knobs for each VST controller in the GUI. Locate the pitch's controller, and automate it.

If you cant connect any pitch dial on the VST then maybe that VST does not have it..
But You should be able to use the PITCH-dial, that is on the Instrument-UI:
