Make drums sound clear without sidechaining

Sidechaining drums over the melody adds a kind of 'hype' which works best in buildup. How many other ways can I make drums clear without sidechaining if I do not want the tension added by sidechaining?

first there is 'ducking', where you simply make a duck of the signals you dont wnat with automation. All sidechaining in FLs is made with ducking

Okay... so you mean automating the volume of one to go down whenever the other plays? Essentially sidechaining, but more vague and user-controlled?
I'm essentially asking for a way to make the beat of a mix clear.

Do you already pan the other instruments ?

Gps I did not think of panning! That's a good idea, how do you suggest I go about it?

I am just starting to serious pan some instruments myself in my tracks.
I have noticed it does help, to not have one big mess of sound.

You could add one of lmms' equalizer plugins to the drum sound. Doing that will make the drum sound stand out from the other sounds.

Good idea, Brandy, but some snares etc have some frequencies in the lower/middle range where some elements of the music may also lie. How do I go about that?

You could cut frequencies, and or just lower some frequencies of certain instruments.
If you do it too much its gonna sound weird, but it can help.
He does it somewhat different then me, but you will get the idea. He cuts(lowers) certain frequencies

Thanks, Gps! I hadn't thought of equalising like that, that's a very sensible way of doing it. I'll keep it in mind when equalizing next.
