Your issue is with the alpha, so it is not 'really' and issue, but (perhaps) you found a bug in that specific build(?)
VST, Malfunction in alpha can be tricky, because you could have a VST SIMPLY is not working in LMMS, or there could be a bug in the build.
Could you try with a vst we know works ? try MDA-Piano

It is very small in size, and you can just copy its dll to your VST-folder. Further its a quite good piano-instrument, so it is a win win
