i edited a hihat sample in the AFE and saved it as an xpf file. then i inserted an AFE track and tried to open my new hihat but it couldn't search for xpf files. how do i put my new hihat in?

Drag it directly in from the sidebar.

In fact you have not altered the audio-file, you have created a preset!
You can create new presets with all LMMS' own instruments, even the VesTige-container, because all LMMS' instruments has this same general options:

Because you save a preset, when you use the save-button, you also have to find the saved preset in sidebar option My-presets
