Is pattern stacking really that useful?

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
There's something that I don't quite understand that has been troubling me for a while.

Why is it possible to stack note patterns on top of each other, and yet there's no easy way to see how many patterns are stacked in the song editor? Under what circumstances would it be better to stack them, as opposed to duplicating onto another instrument track?
I find this more annoying than useful. When patterns are stacked I have to move them one by one to another place on the song editor so I can see how many of them were there. There's no visual feedback on the UI that shows stacking. Same thing with automation patterns.

Maybe I am using this stacking functionality in a wrong way and do not see the benefits of it. Please tell me.

yes -
But here is room for confusion, because one of the features in then FUNC tab is STACKING
But i read your post as if you insert identical notes directly on the same note AND position? - then you should not do that.
Doing that is the same as if you raised the volume 100% of one of the notes!
But!
The feature of overlapping notes is extremely valuable if you move one of the notes in the 'stack' even 1/192. You will emediately be able to at least measure a difference, and with like 1/64 you will hear a big difference!
You can also break long notes in creative ways, if you drop a short note directly on top of a long note, especially mono or legato notes!
For these reasons LMMS 'allow' any overlap of notes -Even the not useful 100% stacking of two identical notes
-An a method to select notes by depth would be needed, if that kind of stack should be split into individual notes ..maybe in the future :p

Thanks for explaining. I was referring to the patterns in the song editor, but you are right to point out that the same functionality (and issue) exists in the piano-roll, where the notes themselves are stackable. I agree that it would be nice to have some way to view and manage the stacks.

I took a peek at FL Studio's online manual. https://www.image-line.com/support/FLHe ... aylist.htm
In FL Studio, the clips on the playlist (the patterns in the song editor) can be made transparent, so you can to some degree see if anything has been stacked. This could be useful.
uhh song-editor stacks are EVIL !! -and they will be prohibited in 'an' update. That is already in the make..
If anyone can make arguments for allowing song-editor blocks to overlap, then its high time to come forward, because that is about to be history ..
