When I click on an instrument for zynaddsubfx in the left hand presets column, some sounds work fine but others either make no sound at all or there's a crackling noise along with a CPU spike. Is this normal or can it be fixed?

So exactly which presets don't work for you ? Bear in mind that some of them have a very slow attack so it takes a while to hear anything.

that sounds a lot as a sound-device issue?
If you use windows, choose SDL
Edit| Settings| sound-device | SDL
(Also works with linux, but ALSA is recommended

Using Linux. I've been using ALSA. I tried SDL and got the same results.
I know some patches take more computing power than others but this is on a 3 year old i5. Seems it should be enough power to play at least 1 sound. I'd try JACK but I can't get it working. Totally separate issue on another forum. Thought I should mention.
EDIT: I've been playing around with the other synths and I'm getting similar results. Just a bunch of crackling noise with or without a CPU spike. The sound may eventually play if I hold the key down but generally not.

something in your linux is propl wrong, because it is not a general issue. Maybe someone who knows linux 100% can aid you, but thats not me -sorry.
-One clue though, is the fail of jack
