Is it OK to record guitar with reverb and other effects on?

Is it right to record guitars just the way we want them to sound? Or will generally audio with recorded reverb be hard to mix (eq, compression,etc)? What are you thoughts on this?
I've heard people say that if the reverb is a big part of the tone and you would use it in a live situations, go for it but if it's there just to make the sound a bit more appealing, to add depth, you should add it in post.
