CPU problems with LMMS, and VST Plugin on Win7 64 bit PC

Hi, I'm new to LMMS and a novice with electronic instruments. I'm running a Win7 64 bit PC with an Intel Core i3 530 CPU running at 2.93 - 3.53 GHz, and 4 gig of RAM. I have two soft synths from Native Instruments: Absynth and Reaktor. I also have a Casio Previa digital piano that I plug into a USB port on my computer through a Midisport 2X2 box. This works fine with the NI synths as well as with LMMS. When I installed my VST files I changed the default directory for them to C:\Program Files\LMMS\vst\. Otherwise I left everything set to default. My Audio Interface setting in LMMS is SDL. My Buffer Size is 256 Frames, Latency 5.8 ms.
While I'm in LMMS, as long as I don't use the VST plugin, the CPU usage indicator within LMMS shows no problems - almost no CPU usage. However, when I exit LMMS a message box appears in the lower left of my screen saying "Project Saved" followed by the path to the project. This message never goes away. If I hover the mouse over it I get the spinning icon indicating its working away. If I click on it I get the error message "lmms.exe is not responding" followed by options to check for a solution, close the program, or wait for it to finish. If I check my CPU usage in Task Manager it's bouncing up and down between about 20% and 100%. LMMS does not show up in the Application tab of Task Manager, but there are several 32 bit processes running that are chewing up the CPU usage; a few of these are:
wcg_gfam_vina_6.11_windows_intelx86 *32
wcg_hcmd2_maxdo_6.40_windows_intelx86 *32
wcg_c4cw_lmps_6.40_windows_intelx86 *32
Each of these processes jumps around between 0% and 25% of CPU usage.
There are also problems that show up with the VST plugin. When I load it and attach Absynth or Reaktor to it, sometimes it's fine, but often LMMS develops terrible latency, sound distortion, and the CPU meter shows that I'm using most of my CPU. This CPU behavior continues even if I'm not doing anything, LMMS is just sitting there. Sometimes I also get an error message loading the VST plugin when I reopen a project - but I expect these are all symptoms of the problem described above.
As I said, I'm pretty new to all of this. Any help would be really, really appreciated.
