Just got it for christmas, and I would like a way to assign pads to different drum sounds. I already changed the midi channels separating the keyboard from the pads, but since there are no actual drumkits, it just plays the same sample at a different pitch.

In LMMS, I think your only option is to use a SF2 drumkit, where each note triggers a different drum sample. Likewise for a pacman kit, or gigasampler kit.
If you are the Linux and the Carla instrument plugins, then you have more flexible options to load lv2 samplers and assign different samples to different notes. My favourite is drumkv1-lv2. There is also drmr-lv2, which loads Hydrogen kits and lets you change the bass-note.
