I sometimes have this issue with projects with vst, but I am on Linux.
What always works for me is try again, maybe after logging out en logging in again.

If you're on windows though, I don't have a clue why this happens.

( Linux uses a windows emulator, called wine, to load windows vst, which works rather well, but it does in general make lmms less stable)

I just had a problem, and was able to solve it, by opening a back up file.
In you're lmms folder there should be files ending with .bak.

Same name, but the extension is.bak.
On windows you might have to rename them first, not sure about that.
On linux I can just right click and use open with.

You do need to remove the '.bak' before it will work, but if it is still an issue, and you want to rescue the notes, it maybe possible to do that, but only if the project is type mmp, or is able to be converted. If necessary, I can help you with that. Just im me.

But first!
If you know that this is an issue caused by a vst, then just open your settings, and change one sigle letter in the vst-path-string. Then close and reopen lmms. Reload the project. Now lmms wont be able to find a single vst, but the project will load. Remove the bad vst, and revert the changed setting. Save and reload.

Thought so, on Linux files don't need extensions, that's why it does not mind two dots in the file name. But more important I hope this will help Chrimiting.
