for the best of lmms competition, i have several tracks that i have made and want to upload one.
i have them saved as WAV and MP3
which is the better option for soundcloud?
WAV files are bigger and I suspect are better in terms of quality

WAV is a lossless format, MP3 isn't. I'd go for WAV.

Well, Soundcloud transcodes all of the uploaded files into MP3. I think the bitrate is around 128.
Its generally better to transcode your song yourself to MP3, since soundcloud's transcoder is not the best and can sometimes cause artefacts.
Also having some headroom in your MP3 doesn't hurt either.

So the end recipe is to export from LMMS in high quality wave (lossless)
Still believe this post of diiz' is the best around this subject:

Then import to Audacity, then export in a mp3 128bit with ~ -5dB on peaks

That's too much headroom... Around -1dB is ok, you can get away with less. You don't want to have any clipping doe.
