Those groups are not moderated, which makes them less reliable. You can use them to get some plays, but feedback isn't guaranteed (even when it says it is).
A talent pool has the added value that participants have a chance to win something in addition to getting feedback and exposure. Compared to those unmoderated SC groups, there's usually a higher chance to get good and useful feedback, because these talent pools are hosted by a record label. In my opinion, one of the best things you can get out a talent pool (besides the winning prize) is this expert feedback.

In the past, I have condemned these talent pools. While I still think there are some obvious drawbacks, I do like the democratic and low-barrier approach. See it as a stepping stone towards getting signed up with a label, should you want to pursue that.
The term 'talent pool' is a bit misleading, because it's not entirely about talent and musical skill. You need to get people to upvote your demo in order to win, which makes it more of a popularity contest.
Has anyone participated in such talent pools? Want to share your comments/thoughts?
