Midi input idea

Is there a way to enable an alternate method of recording MIDI inputs? My idea is, rather than having to keep up with the recorder, have the tracker move every time a key/s is/are input, and that after the key/s are released, the length of time each individual key was held down determines the length of the note in the piano roll.

im afraid that is not going to happen. It is not a musically healthy idea, and is completely against every aspect of a tracker in a DAW. The elegance and actual intended functionality of a DAW is to create sound in the set beat (BPM) that the track is created in. So you design is almost next to the exact opposite of what a piano-roll are meant to be, and designed to be. This idea is not good. Sorry :)

There are DAWs that have MIDI step entry which takes the note pitch from an external keyboard but you usually have to select the note length individually (typically with an F-key). If you have to get the note length right in your playing you might as well do the whole thing (and then quantize and then correct manually). And don't forget you also need a way to enter rests!
