VSTs never make noise

I understand how to instal VSTs and how to use them and everything but for some reason whenever I try to use them they never make any sound. I can't seem to figure out why and I've watched about every tutorial there is to make sure I'm adding them right

Did you use the Vst's suggested on the Lmms wiki?

Check the Lmms Settings menu.

1) Go into the Lmms Settings menu and find the Audio Settings tab.
Change audio device to SDL.

Also:
2) In the same Lmms Settings menu, check to see if any weird symbols are in the folder paths.
eg. $ or % or # etc.

3) Press OK.

4) Close Lmms.

5) Restart Lmms, so that the changes will have effect.
