I have been playing with lmms for a few weeks and I was wondering if there is a way to increase the pitch of an instrument over a few measures to create a sort of build up effect?

There is. Watch this tut on automation:

All you have to do is ctrl+drag the pitch knob instead of the cutoff frequency knob. Feel free to ask if you have further questions or need clarification.

Thank you, that helped a lot. It didn't dawn on me to use automation, I thought it was something with filters and effects. This makes things much easier!

ZynAddSubFX has something similar, in the Frequency envelope (click on the E and then on FreeMode to make it graphical).
