LMMS Saved over track

How do I recover a track that was saved over?
OTOH if you meant something completely different....I've just wasted a few minutes of my life

What does "saved over track" mean ? Do you mean you have saved a project into a file with the same name as a previous project ? If you've only saved it once then try looking for a projectname.mmp.bak (or ....mmpz.bak) file. Then first rename the new project to something different (that's important) and rename that one to take the .bak off the name. You should be able to load it and it should contain the old project. But if you've saved the new one more than once I think you're out of luck.
