Hello there.
I moved from Windows to Linux a few months ago and I've been looking for a nice music production program ever since. I mostly used FL Studio on Sonar on Windows but they are not available on Linux. Yesterday I ran into LMMS and I installed it.
I'm running Ubuntu Gnome and LMMS was in the Ubuntu repository, it installed without a hitch.
I started it and got to the setup menu. This is where I ran into my first problem, a problem that seems very common with linux software. I keep my data on a secondary hard drive and LMMS file browser does not seem to be able to navigate to anything other than the system drive. I also keep my VST Plugins, samples, sound fonts, etc.. on that secondary hard drive, and that is a problem. If you are running your OS and a smaller SSD you don't want to have a large a large sample library or projects on there. File browser needs no be able to access other hard drives on the system.
Second thing that I did not like is that the UI is extremely small. Fonts are tiny and icons are had to see. I'm running 1920 x 1200 resolution. It's probably impossible to use LMMS on a 4k monitor.
Plugin browser window was too small and could not be resized. It also can not open a location on a secondary hard drive.
Some of the icons are not descriptive at all, and they are too small. Re-sizable UI is badly needed.
But enough of criticism, this is a young project and there are some great things I quickly noticed about it. Setting up audio devices was very easy. Latency was set at 5.8 ms from the start and I experienced no glitches during playback. Getting 5.8 ms on Windows would not have been easy. I played some of the demo songs and everything worked smoothly.
While the UI needs a lot of work it reminded me a lot of FL Studio's UI and felt familiar.
There is a nice selection of Demo Songs.
Overall it's a great start, I'll have to try and make some music with it and see how it goes. It's definitely a piece of software that will stay installed
