the button 3 doesnt start the song... mmh :-/
I made some google research, checked also the bearsoundz tutorial "LMMS tutorial: Playback and simultaneous editing in LMMS "
on this video, the button is working, I can't find out why it's not working on mine.. I tried a very easy song with 2 patterns only.
PS: buttons 1 and 2 work ok.

Because it's not going to, when you press those in the Piano roll, they play the pattern in the piano roll, not the song. I hope this helps!

mmh..It's normal isn't it? I kind of noticed now that I can record while playing the song ONLY if I am in the one and same pattern, not in another pattern (I think "pattern" is called "beat/bassline" in Lmms).
But I wanted to have separate patterns: 1 for the accompaniment and 1 for the main melody. And record the main melody "live" while the recorded accompaniment plays.
So maybe a solution would be to first record the melody inside the same pattern where the accompaniment is (but on another instrument) and then to cut/paste the melody in another pattern for better flexibility of placement in the song-editor.

Is it right? or is there a more elegant solution for this?

Thanks :)

Yes, thats exactly what i do in the video you referred to

The 'trick' is the loopmarkes
Your picture isent working, but i bet you are talking about 3. button here
Image
So in SONG!-editor you
* incapsule the part you want to playback in the loop-markers
in any instrument of your choice:
* place an empty block at the start-point of that loop
* double-click that block
Now Piano-roll opens
Here you press 3. key, and lmms will start to playback the whole loop in song-editor, and every note you press, will be added to the piano-roll

I have later found an even simpler way, so perhaps i should make an updated version of the simultaneous-video, but the loop-marker way is so easy, so maby not, we will see

Hi MB,

thanks for your message, I checked again your video and tried to follow it carefully.
I had difficulty to see well but with the help of your message, I got more confidence.
I made a screenshot of my situation at the bottom of that message as well as uploaded the file.

I still didnt got it to work...mmh..what could it be?
I enabled the loop on the piano roll and song editor.
Put the empty block, etc.
PS: when I double click on that empty block, the piano roll doesnt open, so I open it from the beat/bassline editor, could it be a source of the problem?

arhg..
You are correct. Its because lmms still not have transport enabled in Beat&bass-editor, so it need to be a little different:
* Start by making your loop in song-editor
Now you need a new B&B-track -its wise to name it!
* drag the new track to the same length that you have in your loop
Open Beat&bass-editor, and select the named new added B&B-line
* Click anywhere and open it in piano-roll
See Transport has not been implemented (yet), so starting playback from piano-roll button3 will make the loop play, but it will not move the play-head!
You now ONLY have the loop as hallmark, because even though the piano-roll playhead does not move, the notes are indeed inserted as IF a playhead moved!
That mean that you really cant 'play-along' and SEE 'where you are', except when you 'drop' a note, but notes you DO drop, will be inserted at right place in piano-roll.
Buuuut there a serious simpler way..
Follow my video to the letter, and then just copy / move all notes from a std piano-roll opened in song-editor , and insert them in a piano-roll belonging to Beat&bass-editor :p
either way works :)

What do you mean by "not have transport enabled in Beat&bass-editor"
what is "transport"? where can I see it?

I read your post carefully and checked / followed the video one more time,
I understand that there are 2 methods:

1st: to create 2 different B+Bs : one for the beat for ex and one for the loop, that I renamed "loop".
Record the beat, put it in the sond editor, then record the loop, but in that case I can't hear the beat playing along in the background (even pressing on the button "record while playing song"), so it doesnt work really in the situation.

2d possibility:
keep all the recordings under 1 and single B+B Editor. Meaning the accompaniment + the lead instrument inside 1 single B+B.
Then it works, I can hear the accompaniment playing along and record the lead melody.
After that I can cut/paste the piano roll of the lead melody into another new B+B Editor that I can rename "loop" or "lead".

Did I understood it right?

sorry my bad -means playhead controll through the buttons
Tomzic wrote:2d possibility:

No, not in Beat&bass editor at all
You MAKE the whole thing exactly as i showed in my video, everything takes place in song-editor and pianoroll
THEN you copy all notes you like to use in Beat&bass editor opens a Beat&bass editor-pianoroll, and paste all the notes there

..actually, i think the copy-paste way is your best choice. The other way will only let you listen to ONE B&B simultaneity with editing (because of that transport thing)
Copy from song-editor then paste in B&B-editor

If im un-clear let me know :)

Could you do a new video on the subject? that really would help me a lot to see how it goes.
On the video from 2010, I have difficulty because it doesnt start from the beginning, the project is already there and I can't see the whole screen of LMMS and what has been done before, so I am a little bit puzzled.

Ideally If you could record on video a very easy example with only 2 tracks, starting from nothing, create an easy accompaniment and a lead melody on top, recorded as play along.
Showing the 2 methods? that really would be great! :)
