KXstudio's distro is the one that most has full success with:
KXStudio "lmms-vst-full - Linux Multimedia Studio - full VST support Using Wine"
"Note: To use the VST support with Wine, you have to assign /usr/lib/lmms to some drive letter using Wine configuration (winecfg). Otherwise, Wine cannot load VST plugin (VeSTige)."

I hope this is the fix, otherwise you need a linux inputter..
Me personal, would contact the package builder for Ubuntu, and ask him (or them) why they deliver a broken LMMS package.
That's what I do, if I have a lmms prob like this, on openSUSE. ( for openSUSE the package builders is packman )
I don't understand why some Distro's do this, leave vestige out.
If the tips from music bear don't fix it, next thing to try, open a console and start lmms by typing LMMS,
Don't close the console, let LMMS start and then check the console for errors.
