LMMS won't load

I heard about LMMS a few weeks back and thought I might try it out. I have the program properly installed on my laptop, which is an (admittedly rather crappy) Lenovo Yoga 12. My computer runs on Windows 10 and is updated regularly.

Whenever I try to open LMMS, all I get (and all I have ever gotten) is merely what appears to be a basic loading screen. The program never progresses past this point, regardless of how long I leave it open. Inevitably I force quit the program and move on. I have tried restarting the computer, as well as uninstalling and then reinstalling LMMS. Nothing seems to work.

I consider myself to be reasonably tech literate, but I have a rather limited understanding of programming. I am wondering if anyone else knows what sort of problem I've been encountering, and can tell me how to fix it. I would be incredibly grateful.

Hope you can 'hear lmms' itself shortly :)

are you sure you have chosen the correct installation pack, you do not try to install x64 on a x32 pc?

Did you get your pack here:
https://lmms.io/download/#windows ?

Is it the stable 1.1.3 ?

If not get a new one, remove everything you have, and re-install

Let me know how it went.
If its a no go please post
* hardware specification (ram & soundcard is the most imortant)
* if any -screenshots of error

Even though you are in a fix right now i would like to Welcome you to the forum Aristotle384! Here are all our important links:

Thanks for the welcome! I really appreciate the advice. I will attempt to answer your queries in order:

1.) I definitely installed the stable 1.1.3 version of LMMS, and downloaded it from the same webpage you provided a link to.

2.) According to the Lenovo website, the model of laptop I use has a x64-based processor. There are a number of possible processor models listed on the website, but I know for a fact that mine has the Intel CORE i5 vPro processor, 5th edition.

3.) I initially installed the x64 version of LMMS the first time around. When the x64 didn't work, I uninstalled that and replaced it with the x32 version just to see if that would somehow make a difference. There was no change.

4.) I'm not quite certain about the RAM and sound card. I have not modified this laptop's hardware since getting it, so I assume that the tech specs on the aforementioned Lenovo website should be accurate. The "Memory" section of the page I looked at listed the following specification: "4GB/8GB DDR3L - 1600Mhz (On Board)". I believe that refers to RAM, though I could be mistaken.

The matter of the sound card is somewhat more difficult. The "Audio" portion of the page describes the laptop as having "Dolby Advanced Audio", though I believe that is a piece of software. Here is the page in question, if you wish to have a look for yourself: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/th ... tech_specs. In all honesty, I know rather little about my particular machine beyond the stuff that's described there. I updated my laptop to Windows 10, and keep updating it regularly, but beyond that, I haven't really made any significant changes to my laptop's default settings.

5.) Here is a screenshot of the error, as requested: http://i.imgur.com/LM1Cqrz.png. Whenever I try to open LMMS, this is all I ever see. When I click on that window, I get a message telling me the program is not responding.

Thanks again for helping. Let me know if there is any other relevant information I can provide.

You have fine hardware, and have even tried the x32.
You have done all just right.

Im afraid that i am quite stumped on this one.. Though, i would like to know if you can install other programs with no problems.
I would like you to install Audacity. It is a great program, and a really good supplement to lmms.
Get this installer:
https://www.fosshub.com/Audacity.html/a ... -2.1.2.exe
Can you install this with no problems?

so there is no error log or anything? Hmmm I wonder if it is somehow using only the cpu or gpu instead of both? For this reason, maybe when you run lmms again, put up task manager (Do Ctrl Alt Del for task manager) because then it would show us how much of your gpu or cpu it is using up.

In a word, yes. I have used Audacity in the past for a handful of projects without issue.

Here's what I got: http://i.imgur.com/Icym6uR.png. LMMS was listed under "Background Processes" for some odd reason. I watched the Task Manager for several minutes and LMMS stayed at these levels (34.3% CPU, 27.7 MB) for the entire time, with only a little variation.

Thanks again for helping, everyone. I really appreciate it. Let me know if there's any more information I can give you.

Hi. :)
When you were about to install Lmms:
Did you right click, on the Lmms installer and run/install Lmms as Administrator? 8-)
Or did you, just do the normal double clicky thing, to run the Lmms installer and install Lmms?

No you misunderstand me. What i wanted you to test, was if you at current setup, can install programs at all. Audacity was just a sane choice. It is the installation process i wanted to check the health of.

I still do.. It must be a windows installer test.
Please make sure you can use a win-installer successfully.

The administrative angle should only matter, it you have more than one account.

Your taskman shows a usage of 27.7 mb, so only ~ 1/3 of normal mem are used..

I wonder..
LMMS has a stupid file. I have argued it several times, and i wonder if this again is that file.
Read this
https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=LM ... h_Settings
and follow all the instructions (eg deinstall as well as move.)
My thoughts here are that you still may have the dot-file from the x64 installation attempt, and that that x64dot-file now obstruct the loading of your x32, but im grasping straws..

Hello, everyone. I'm sorry for taking so much longer to respond than usual--I had to deal with finals at school. Now that all my tests and papers have been successfully completed, I can focus once again on this issue.
brandystarbrite wrote:Did you right click, on the Lmms installer and run/install Lmms as Administrator? 8-)
I uninstalled LMMS and reinstalled it again just to test this. Presently, I don't seem to be able to right-click on the installer and select "Run as Administrator". For me, at least, that option does not currently seem to exist, unless I somehow went about the process incorrectly. However, I was able to "Run as Administrator" when opening the program after it had already been installed. This did not change anything.
musikbear wrote:What i wanted you to test, was if you at current setup, can install programs at all.
That makes a lot of sense. I apologize for the misunderstanding. I followed your instructions and reinstalled Audacity on my laptop using the standard installation wizard. I was able to do so successfully.
musikbear wrote:The administrative angle should only matter, it you have more than one account.
For what it's worth, I only have one account on my laptop.
musikbear wrote:follow all the instructions (eg deinstall as well as move.)
I'm sorry to report that I cannot find the file described in the link you gave me (that is, ".lmmsrc.xml") anywhere on my computer. It was difficult to even figure out where the file should be, since Windows 10 appears to have gotten rid of the traditional "Documents and Settings" folder and moved the files that used to be there to a new, hidden folder. I found this post online, which explains where the files from "Documents and Settings" are now located: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 2a3a2999d1.

I was able to find the folder described in the link above, but could not locate .lmmsrc.xml. In fact, LMMS didn't even have a folder in that location. However, while browsing my laptop for other hidden folders that might contain helpful information, I did find a whole bunch of .wer files from all the times LMMS has crashed upon my attempts to open it. I used a viewer to check out the files, but I don't quite understand what they mean. I am wondering if these files might be helpful in understanding my present situation.

Also, ever since I reinstalled LMMS this most recent time, whenever I try to open the program I get a standard post-installation message saying something like "Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?" Of course, I always say yes, but it doesn't seem to matter. This extra stage did not occur following previous installation attempts. Don't know if this is relevant, but thought I might share, just in case.

Thanks again for helping, everyone. I know that this is turning out to be rather complicated, but I still appreciate the advice.

Can you make a screenshot with that message?

I am in no way close to understand this strange behaviour, i must have done lmms installation in the hundrets, but i have never had your problems, in fact i have never had problems.

But i do have this
You can enable your administrator, this way:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfbMs3w-Z3s

winHlp explain also how to log in as admin
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/hel ... inistrator

when you are admin;
Set folder-options to show all hidden files and folders
* see it the dot-file is available now
* Then move it
If there is non, no installation process has ever run to the end, so non is created.
* de-install lmms from program-control if possible
* Scan for anything lmms, and remove
* re-install a fresh lmms

I hope this will do it, but i am baffled from your error messages...
