The original sample, would not be messed up, if you make a copy of it.
But as a precaution,
make a copy of the sample, as a back up copy, in case the worst happens.

Believe it or not
Audacity normally automatically does that for you. But still, make a backup copy just in case.

If you mean, if the Tempo Change effect, would corrupt the sound, or not do the Tempo operation properly....
Due to some algorithm weakness in the program, it can sometimes, remove some parts at the end of the sample.
So my suggestion, is to do some Tempo testing. And hopefully it works well for you.
