How do I keep from being off-key?

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!
This is probably a really unproffesional question, but how do I stay on key in LMMS? I honestly don't understand how that works. I've gotten some feedback saying that some of my work sounds "atonal" (which apparently is the same thing as off key). If you feel that it would be too difficult to explain, could you tell me if this http://youtu.be/A1w-6Y3ruz4 is atonal? Then at least I might have a basic idea.

Hi! :D I just listened to your plight and song. And I couldn't resist helping you out. Here's my analysis. :ugeek: "Yes. Today I'm a sophisticated Geekatron."

From 1:10 is where I'll start: The switch of melody and tone and pitch from 1:20-1:22 is one example. It would kinda sound out of pitch and timing to "certain people on Youtube." " Dang critics!!" "But in my opinion, for this type of "unique music genre and style "you have going there, you did this unusual combination tonal/pitch shift, way better than than most people. .........................."including D Getter." Gasp!! I didn't say that!! Run!! But it's true.
And you made it sound kinda catchy and 80's style Ambient like too. Check Zlad's 80's music song entitled "Electonik Supersonic." It's a good example.

1:30-1:33 is another tone/pitch switch example.

1:37 straight into cool main beat is another example. The pitch/tone switch is so abrupt. " You made this shift sound cool though."

2:23-2:23 piano tone/key, sound is another example.

2:31-2:32 car alarmy type sound playing at the same time as BG music is a perfect example, of two tones etc. not going in pitch/tone etc. Good for dubstep/electronica type music. "If you know how to combine it well." You did it well enough though. :)

Quick switching from 2:40-2:41 main beat is another example. "I luv this part!"

All in all. This whole song/mix is......................................"pretty cool!!" Yay!! :o
And besides, alot of "so called big name "electronica/ dubstep artists, " have done way wacky sounding, out of timing/embarrassingly worse stuff. And strangely............make money? " How in the world do they do that?! Of course,.......................they have big names. He! He!

In my research, it seems "atonality." was a popular type of music composed and played in the late, 19th century into the early 20th. Are they the grandfathers of early 80's style and modern day electronic music? Hmmmmmm............... :ugeek:
Check this.........................http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atonality for more info.

This famous song is one example......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTXb1VmzIx4 this is Zlads 80's song. Note: I was a baby back then. Wah!!
Check 1:55 to 1:57 in Zlads song. That off key out of timing switch/pitch shift is pretty famous. Especially the note or beat used for that part of the song.
"Old people old enough to be our parents, love and remember that out of timing/ "atonal type beat, and singing" "It's famous!!
"Well........................for them." :? But anyways it sounds cool.

Some people do "atonal style deliberately" well,...............others.............. don't, or partially suck in music. So in reality, it is a style in music. So don't let it bother you.

If this is deliberate because of your style, many props to you. If not.......................you have an "off key problem." :o

But it seems to be used often," even by big name electronic musicians," in electronic music, even to this day.
It seems to be popular in 80's electronic music. And sometimes, in modern electronic music. But in trance...............well,.............that's another story. :?

Many electronis musicians hate, when people call their work, "Atonal!" Gasp!! I don't blame them.
Others, have a problem putting key's in same pitch etc. SO in some cases, it can also be musician problem. He! He!

Well, I hoped I helped you. Nice song mix. It didn't place 2nd, third, or at least 4th in the competition you entered? Weird! How come?

Oh well. Sorry if I wrote a long reply to your question. I actually wrote this in a hurry because I'm hungry. And it's dinner time. Wish I had Pizza. Sheesh!!
Well, I hoped I helped you djkingpin. Keep up the good work. And if you want to test yourself, try making one song in a different genre of music, and see what happens. Don't take it hard on yourself, if you have a music key problem.
I think it's because you seem to be into electronica/ dubsteppy type sounding music. That's why. Hope I made sense throughout this whole reply.
But all in all, good job djkingpin . Bye, and laters.
here
http://www.pianoscales.org/chart.html
are the complete chart of all scales
If you stay in-scale, you wont sound atonal
But in fact you only need to use the white keys as you compose, then move everything to the key you want your piece in.*
This may sound odd /erronius, but that is the nature of the piano-keys. The ..key..-word :p here is degrees, and you can find half a trillion pages on the net on that -most of the pages will have it in a section called music-theory
Like:
http://www.8notes.com/theory/

*others will argue on this, and talk about 'tension notes' and stuff, and right so.. but that is a whole different area, and often the sugested oddities actually are in a scale, just not a minor or major, but one of the rare and exoxtic, like the blues-scale

That might be worth reading a little too. Other than that, the answers posted already are more useful than what I could say.
Neat. That info from pauljs75 and musikbear is very interesting and informative as well. Thanks for the links guy's. I hope it helps djkingpin. :)
Wow thanks guys :D !!! I'm sure that will help me a whole lot, and I really appreciate that! And I'm glad you liked the song Brandystarbrite!

Well, according to the one and only "judge" of the competition, I placed 7th. Out of 12. Not that bad actually! Especially because I was the only one who entered using freeware!

:o woah. So you knew most of that stuff right off the bat? Thats impressive. Is there any music of yours online that I could listen to? I'm interested to hear what you do!
So you're on the LMMS forum at the same time as me huh? Nice. He! He! :D
You placed 7th out of twelve, using freeware? Wow! Not bad. Not bad at all!

djkingpin says: "woah. So you knew most of that stuff right off the bat? Thats impressive. Is there any music of yours online that I could listen to? I'm interested to hear what you do!"

Yeah, I knew most of that stuff already. Problem is, I forgot about the term used...."atonal." When I read what it meant, I remembered what I learnt about it, years ago.
Wow! I was sooooooo hungry last night. Growl!!

My music is not online, or on YouTube yet. Because I'm composing them right now as we speak. That's why I'm on Lmms forums often these day's, asking questions about,
"How to make Pluck notes etc." I even discovered some unexpected results playing with the with the "Organic" in Lmms. :o It has left me breathless for day's. :o
I didn't know Lmms could do that type of sounds? Wow!! You should check Organic out.
Triple oscillators, Moog synthesiser is amazing too. I made ambient Trance Background type music with it. Didn't know you could do that.

As soon as I'm done with at least two of songs, I'll upload them on YouTube and post them in the Lmms forums. In the Projects section of the forum.

My music style is Trance. But my style is unique and different. It's close to the style of this song, "FANTASY".......http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6b3OYRKQ9Q
Well sort of.

I LUV this one too.........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlMm1sQKnJo

Well Laters, for now dude. Glad I could help. :D
I've also had many interesting discoveries in LMMS. Can U give me a link to Ur youtube page, so I can subscribe?
