Hi,
For a track I am working on I have pad to which I would like to apply a gate effect. Something along the line like in this video at 7:30:

Is this possible in LMMS?
TIA

Try using ZynAddSubFX or perphaps Synth1 (vsti). You should manage to get something similar after trying.

I am using Synth1, but it's not clear to me how to obtain this gate effect with it...

You can either use a square LFO, automation or do it manually with note placement.
If you do the latter, make sure the attack is large enough and the release non-existent.
You could probably also do some hack with a muted instrument and a peak controller on the pad, but I'll leave that aside.

Thanks for the suggestion.
As a matter of fact, I had thought about those methods as well, but they seemed rather cumbersome.
In the mean time I have found a neat (free) synth called Feldspar which has a ton of modulating options including a built in step sequencer. It works fine in Linux. Making a gated pad with it is quite straightforward.

Make sure this synth are saved in LMMS. currently there are some issues with 'some' vst's regarding saving user settings.
It is reported and hopefylly it will be fixed
reason is various vsts build kits
- ..but that is in fact completely irrelevant in respect to your question.
You should not step-sequencing for gating. You should sidechain.
I have a video tut
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U04Umj1puVI
and others have too. Mine is old
Do a search on the others
-----------edit------
i looked for a specific tut, but cant find it .. cr*p

could be taken down..

anywhitch -search ducking / compression
pressed for time

The settings are saved. To be on the safe side, I always save the synth settings separately also, so in case anything goes wrong I can still reload them...

Sidechaining isn't always the solution if you want irregular gating. It's just one particular case of gating.
