I'm wondering if there is a decent source for open/free/creative commons (royalty free) samples out there. I want my projects to be completely open. Anyone out there with some sources?

You might want to check out
http://www.freesound.org/
It might not be exactly what you want, but it's a good place to start. The samples are royalty free (I believe), but you have to distribute a text file with your song saying who did each sample and where they can get it if they want it.

You can also check out
http://www.sampleswap.org. It's pretty vast and there are some great samples amongst the... other stuff.

That is just a result of how the plugin manipulates the sound. If you are trying to play with the pitch, you could try the pitch knob in the instrument window.
