Hello, I have just started working with LMMS, and I need to get the Plogue sfz player into the mix. I am working on Linux (Zorin 12), using Wine. I have the sfz player downbloaded and the standalone version works, I can get sound out of it. But I can't see how to get it into LMMS.

You load sforzando same as any other VST, select Vestige from the instrument list then load sforzando into it. See https://lmms.io/documentation/Working_with_VSTs

I don't know how well it works with LMMS on Linux though.

Hi Slipstick, I remember you from the Reaper forum. I just figured out that the problem is that my instrument list is not showing Vestige. The LMMS manual states that this may be due to a problem with Wine, and suggests that I check with the distro forum (Zorin). I'll see what they have to say.

I'm going to try uninstalling LMMS from Zorin, and reinstall from LMMS directly. Maybe there was a problem with how it installed during the Zorin installation. In addition to Vestige not being in the instrument list, there were a bunch of other ones missing as well.

As for Wine: I'm not running LMMS in Wine, as it runs natively in Linux. Only using it for the sfz player. But the problem is with Vestige not being listed, so I doubt this is a wine problem. sfz works fine as a standalone, so Wine is working fine there.

I suspect a problem with the LMMS package for zorin.

A lot of the distro's seem to give lmms without vestige and also an old version.

The solution for me on openSUSE, was to speak to the package builders.

Well, I've tried uninstalling from Zorin, and reinstalling from here. Same problem. Then I went on my Ubuntu drive and tried installing it there. Still no Vestige. I am now on my Windows drive, and installing LMMS here did give me Vestige, and I was able to load sfz into it. I am currently downloading Virtual Playing Orchestra so I have some sounds for it.

The problem is that the reason I am interested in LMMS in the first place is the ability to use it on Linux. So, my question now is, is there a Linux distro that would be better to do music on? I am aware of Ubuntu Studio and AV Linux. Is anyone here successfully using LMMS on any Linux distro, and, specifically, using Vestige?

OpenSUSE leap overhere. Vestige working fine. I would not call openSUSE a distro specific for making music though.

Opensuse is about stability and savety, not about latest of the latest and the best performance.

Steam runs fine here too btw.

For those that want to try opensuse, after installing it, you need to add the packman repository, and get lmms from packman, not the one from the "normal" opensuse repositories. Simple way to check this is to see if you get 1.1.3 and not some old version.

Opensuse has two flavors. Leap the one I am using and thumbleweed a rolling release.

Part of me is totally confused why it seems to be so hard to get vestige on Linux, but not on opensuse, wtf ?

Thanks GPS. I'll look at Opensuse. I've tried many Linuxes, all of them Debian/Ubuntu distrtos. I've heard that Arch is really good for music, but that is a different animal, not exactly user-friendly. But Opensuse is very popular in Linux circles, must be a good distro.

As to why Vestige won't work on Zorin: since I have Ultimate Zorin, I get premium support. I'll contact the Zorin bros and ask them directly. They're pretty responsive so maybe they can come up with a fix.

( because I hardly ever need it, and when I do, its usual something copy pasted from the openSUSE forum.

The openSUSE install only comes with opensource software. That's why we need to add packman.
Packman gives us codecs and stuff not opensource, but things we need to listen to music and watch vids.

Arch is a good distro, but not one I would advise for people starting with Linux.

Contacting Zorin is the right thing to do. They probably don't even know there is a problem with the lmms package.
