Each instrument in a different key/pitch?

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
Hello.

Every instrument seems to be in a different key. Everytime I try to use multiple instruments it always sounds hellish and I just end up sticking to one.

Is there a way to fix this?

I've tried moving the little green square in the audiofile processor to the right key, because I read somewhere that's how you let the program know what tone the sample is or something. Funny thing is, that worked ONE time with one of the organs. And it hasn't worked since. What happens instead is that the new key, where I moved the green square, just sounds like the key where it was before.

Any helpful tips?

Welcome to the forum easterbunny! First, For you all important links:

Those are strange issues.
When you say
try to use multiple instruments
Are you talking about several instruments in song-editor
https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=Song_Editor
, or one of the multi-instrumental sound-fonts
https://lmms.io/wiki/index.php?title=SF2_Player
In some SF2s you can have different samples on different keys, all percussion presets, are f.i. like that.
move the little green

Is called Base-note, and the behaviour should not be like you describe it.

Could you please post your:
* OS (+service-pack-ver)
* lmms vers
* hardware specification (ram & soundcard is the most imortant)
* lmms sound device chosen

and we will take it from there :)
If you're using the Audio File Processor then I guess you are playing samples rather than instruments (instruments are things like Triple Osc or ZynAddSubFX). With samples you are always dependent on knowing what note the original sample is recorded at and setting the green Base-Note to suit.

But you say you move the base-note and key you move it to sounds like the old key it was on....that is exactly what is supposed to happen. If you move the green base-note down then the original sound appears on the new key and the old key you moved it from sounds higher than it did before. That's how it works.

More details of exactly what instruments/samples you are trying to use would probably help.

Yes. Just dragging and dropping instruments there.

(Hope I get this right:)

* OS (+service-pack-ver) - Windows 10 (Don't think I have a service pack)
* lmms vers -1.1.3
* hardware specification (ram & soundcard is the most imortant) (HP ProBook, RAM: 4,00 GB, soundcard: AMD high definition audio device)
* lmms sound device chosen - Not entirely sure what this means, I assume the bits in the program I use and have trouble with?

For example, usually I go to My Samples- Instruments and then select Piano01.ogg, drag and drop it to the song editor and create some chords in the piano roll.

Then I might want to add an organ to the song I'm working on, just for a nice effect, so I drag and drop church_organ02.ogg to the song editor and create the same chord in the piano roll. But since they have different pitches, it sounds terrible, like they are not the same chord at all. If I want to get by this, I might try to find a different matching chord (say I created a C with the piano, I might find that with the organ I need to create an A for them to sound the same (Just an example, point is they are different) But this is a real hassle)

Ok I hope that cleared things up a bit.
Yes, those are SAMPLES you are using. And they don't work very well because, as I said, the note they play depends on how they were recorded. Also as there's only a single sample per instrument they only sound reasonable over about an octave at most. Samples are great for percussion and perhaps very simple bass lines but lousy for making melodies and harmonies.

If you want things that sound like traditional instruments (rather than synthesisers) you'll probably do better using a Soundfont via the SF2 player. See the link in musikbear's post. You'll need to download a soundfont .sf2 file. I use mainly synths but I have used the soundfont from http://www.ntonyx.com/sf_f.htm There are many others available free of charge. Just Google "free GM sound font".

It's also worth investigating the "My Presets" list because there are loads of interesting sounds in there too.

This is in the settings:

Since you have windows, SDL is recommended!

Do you understand what Steve tells you? The instrument samples are really mend to play one note.. For that reason, they are not really useable as instruments. but works fine as effects. The reason is that lmms does not have methods to alter pitch and sample-length, simultaneous That is really complicated process!
Use real instruments instead! They are far superior to samples. I strongly recommend the zynAddSubFX instruments, and you can find a lot of tutorials on my channel,

if you feel like going deep into the beast :)
Just for novelty-reasons really, i would like to show you an old tutorial i made, where samples actually CAN be used as instruments!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrTyzMo3VU4
But it takes quite some fiddling with the base-note, to find the exact pitch. Kind of fun, and can produce very surprising sounds, but in long run, not rational :)
> Each instrument in a different key/pitch?

now
you need create yout sf2 file with Polyphone sound font editor (google it)
but i better recommend to create sfz file and then convert it to sf2
coz sfz it just text file with simple format

http://www.keyboardmag.com/miscellaneou ... iles/31010
see "Instrument Creation Tutorial" part

there is simple example shows how to create multipatch bank:

- sfz file
- sf2 file (you can convert sfz to sf2 with Polyphone - just load sfz and export to sf2)
- lmms project which use this sf2

https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=8 ... file%2czip
---

P.S. but it will be awesome feature if lmms will have multisample and multilayer patching out of box (like some different instruments wiill be grouping by piano notes and by velocity ranges and controlling by one piano roll editor)

Polyphone sound font editor? :o
Wooah! Sounds like something, I want to check out. :D
Maybe this might help me make some cool choirs, since I can't find, certain choir vowel sound Soundfonts I need.
Cool site. :D

Looks interesting indeed. Imports sfz and multiplatform!
