Delay/lag with soft synths in Linux

Hi

I've been playing around with LMMS and the softsynths it comes with and loving it. With some of them like ZynAddSubFX there is considerable lag when playing over midi. It's especially annoying when trying to record notes.

What is the cause of this and what can I do? A friend mentioned a switch to a realtime Linux kernel, would that help?

Or do I just need a better computer? If so, is the processor, memory, or the sound card the key piece of hardware here?

I'm not sure about the kernel thingy, but most Linux distros aren't known to have high latency audio, so it might be your hardware. What are your specs?

I think I, and I know other, have had the same problem under Linux. So basically I believe it is a workaround or something.

For all OS this applies:
In the settings you can decide the buffer size and thus what kind of latency you want. If you move the slider to the left, you can see that the delay in milliseconds is counted down. Remember to restart LMMS!

I use a lot lmms under Ubuntu 12.04 and experienced this kind of trouble too.

I applied most of the directives and did not experienced lags anymore, even with no linux 'real' realtime kernel.
The Perl script realtimeconfigquickscan, as noted there helped a lot too.
For each problematic aspect it finds about timing, it gives a link to the solution.
Not all applied for me, but I have no delay anymore when recording or playing back.
