Alesis Q49 and LMMS works

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!
Hello
I am new to music, keyboards and midi.
My only claim as a musician is I can play God Save The Queen on a descant recorder, learnt age 6ish.
I want to learn the keyboard so acquired an Alesis Q49 as it has full sized keys.
I down loaded LMMS and it worked basically out the box once I set midi input device to Q49.

The Q49 has two wheels Pitch and Modulation.
Pitch seems to work but not Modulation, another DAW shows
From Q49: Chan 1: Modulation chan: 1 value: 46 Where
46 varies from 0 to 127.
Any ideas ?

Anyone else any hints and tips using Q49

Thanks
Jim
Welcome to LMMS

Because Pitch is a fixed control which always affects the note pitch it can be connected automatically. The Mod wheel however can be used to control more or less any knob on the instrument interface - filter frequency, filter resonance, attack length, pan, fine pitch...anything you choose. Because of this it won't do anything until you connect it to the control you want it to affect.

What exactly you can do with it will depend on what instrument inside LMMS you're using. But the basic principle is:
- find the knob you want the Mod Wheel to control (filter freq is one I often use)
- right click on the knob and a list will pop up
- in the list select "Connect to controller", a "Connection Settings" box will pop up
- make sure MIDI controller and Auto Detect are lit up then just move the Mod Wheel on your keyboard...it will probably show as ch1, controller 2
- click OK and the mod wheel should now control the knob you selected

Have fun - Steve
OK thanks, I will try it.
I can see this is going to be a long steep learning curve !

Well if you're just learning to play tunes on a keyboard you're not going to really need pitch bend and mod wheels for a while. But you're right, there can be a lot to learn, depending on exactly what you're aiming for. It's very easy to get bogged down with all the knobs and buttons all over the screen and forget that basically you're just trying to make some music :).

That's very true, since getting it a few days ago I have hardly looked at tunes melodies or chords. Just pratted around with midi features.Must concentrate more on the music side.

You're welcome and as I'm sure you realise you can set up any other knob/slider control on a MIDI keyboard controller the same way. It just sets it up as a different controller (CC) number (at least that's how it works with my M-Audio Oxgen).

Hi,

I was planning to get an alesis vmini keyboard as it fits my budget. Does anybody know if it works well with lmms? Has anybody used it?

Thanks

doubt anyone can help you with the keyboard . There are so many different keyboards, so it is unlikely that someone has that one too.
I checked, and it has never been mentioned before.
One thing about mini-kb - If you use a mini, you will have difficulties getting use to full-size.
Instead of buying a new mini, it could perhaps be an alternative to buy a used full-size?
