Lost the Piano Roll but Music Still There

I am using LMMS 1.1.3. On the Sone Editor, the first "instrument" I have is called a "Bell Chord" and it is from Triple Oscillator. I copied this from a project downloaded from the Share platform.

I opened up the piano roll on bar 21, entered some notes and played the music. Then I closed the piano roll and played the music from the song editor. I don't know what I have clicked but suddenly the notes showing on bar 21 disappeared, so it is showing a block of light gray bar. I cannot open the piano roll anymore, but when I play the song editor and it reached bar 22 (yes, for some reason it is bar 22 now), the music is still played.

I don't know what is going on. Could someone help me to open the piano roll again? Thanks in advance!

Bar 22 has music in it.

Welcome to the forum MichiganDave! Here are all our important links:

Theres a couple of things i dont get
suddenly the notes showing on bar 21 disappeared, so it is showing a block of light gray bar.
That i do not understand, but if your screenshot is meant to show this situation, then there is no note-block inserted in bar 21.
The light-gray 'rectangles are empty slots.
With that i mean, you have not notes in bar 21.
I cannot open the piano roll anymore : the music is still played.
That one is propl easy.
Close song-editor
look at the slider in the bottom of the screen
click on the piano-roll button
did the slider move?
If so, your piano-roll is outside the view to the right
Scroll the view to the right, find it, and drag it to the wanted position.

Let us know the result

Hi musikbear, thanks for your reply and welcome! I am not completely new to LMMS or this forum, however. I had an account a few years ago but didn't use it much at all, so I completely forgot what it was and had to create a new one.

<< That i do not understand, but if your screenshot is meant to show this situation, then there is no note-block inserted in bar 21.

But I do have notes there! If I place the play cursor on bar 22 and hit play, it immediately play the music notes that I had placed there before. It is not that it waited until I got to some bars later.

It looks like I might have accidentally found a display/interface bug if this is not a normal behavior of LMMS, and I can duplicate it:

The photo below shows that I have some notes in bar 22. If I double clicked on it, I could see from the piano roll that the notes extend to 3 bars, but instead of showing them in bar 22, 23, and 24, it shows partial notes only in bar 22. I am not sure if this is the expected behavior:
Image

I was trying to move the notes to a few bar later, so I clicked and hold bar 22 and try to move to the right, it didn't move the bar, but instead, it scrolled the notes inside, so it shows different notes in bar 22 now (note the notes are different in bar 22 now):
Image

If I continued to hold the mouse on bar 22 and move right, eventually I would push all the notes out, so now the notes "disappeared":
Image

If now I double clicked on bar 22, the piano roll would show empty as all the notes had been pushed somewhere. If I played bar 22 now, there would be no music. But the notes were simply pushed to the right because now you can hear music on bar 23 although nothing is shown there.

If you double clicked bar 23, it is empty.

But somehow the music notes were actually pushed into bar 24 (although we could not tell). If I now place my mouse on bar 24 and pull it to the left, I could see the notes again:
Image

I had never experienced this before, but admittedly I used to be interested in others' music before and haven't done much on creating my own music in LMMS before, so I don't know if what I described above is normal or not.

I am using Windows 10.

Argghh... bommer..
Ya.. that is seriously weird
Great explanation -thanks!
Can you upload the project saved as MMP, and IM me a link, or just post it here?

Not 100% I fully understand your issue- but it sounds vaguely like a problem I've been having- where regions and notes disappear from the song editor but are still present in preview/export.

My "fix" for that particular issue is to just clone the track- the missing regions will be visible in the cloned track and I can just remove the buggy track.

Musikbear, here is the file:
https://1drv.ms/f/s!AqI5gEyQR5QxbkA8IczcuIEeKLA

I include an project note in the mmpz file showing where the problem area is (bars 31 and 32).

Manatee, thanks for your reply. At this point since I know what is happening, it is not too much a problem for me except that it is weird, so I am see this as a bug reporting process. But thanks! :-)

I worked a little more on this and can now duplicate it even in new project.

Basically what happened is when you click on an empty bar, it somehow marked that bar as having content, so when you scroll other section over the empty bar, the section appears under it. This is easier to explain with images:

Here I started a new project and entered some notes:
Image

Now I can move the section normally. This image shows that I have moved it to bar 8 and everything looks normal:
Image

Now I moved it back and pressed bar 9. Note that bar 9 now has a lighter color:
Image

And now if I moved the notes back to bar 8, note that some notes are "hidden" behind bar 9. Of course if I had clicked bar 8 to 11 before, then the whole notes would "disappear" behind bar 8 to 11:

:) ya, its dead simple. You or the first guy that worked on this project, has added a lot of empty blocks.
They appears as mousegray rectangles.
An empty block is then meant to be either:
* right-clicked, and opened in piano-roll
* used as a reception-block for a block that has been either copied or cut

You can simply middle-mouse click each of them, and they will disappear, and under the empties, you will find your missing notes :P

I should have figured this out, without having your file ::facepalm
So no. your project is not corrupt, nor is this a bug
