Giving a percentage to the authors may boost this competition. Or else, if someone makes a really nice track with LMMS, why would he enter the competition when he can sell it online for himself? (and then perhaps donate a part of the profit to the LMMS development

Well, that's an interesting question.
You have a free choice, to either enter the competition, or sell it online and then donate. Or both.
Either way, it also helps with Lmms promotion and development.
Many users take part in the competition, because they want to, and it's a cool competition too.

PS: Also, please don't send so many spammy messages. It's tiring for the mods, to remove them.

Well if it's of any worth mentioning, Loudr/Soundrop now support dividing profits of songs sold between artists. Not to mention they'll put the albums out to most stores like iTunes, Amazon MP3, Google Play. Bandcamp might be a tad tricky, but I seem to recall them saying it was ok.

In either case, if any of my tracks make it into the Best of LMMS 4, I'll be doing a remix contest with the top five remixes getting featured. I might end up selling that through loudr. It all depends on a few things with them though.

So far no one has told about having any success in that direction. We are mostly hobbyists here.

Nothing is stopping someone from selling their track if it does get on a Best of LMMS Album. In my experience BoL helps submitting artists by giving their work a large and receptive audience.

I have not encountered anyone that uses lmms and actually has song sales revenue significant enough to bother mentioning, fyi

The original post was a bit confusing...
I thought it was a new competition, but if this person was talking about the "best of LMMS", it's a competition that's held by a community for a great piece of FOSS software... They offer some exposure but don't do any of the "we own a percentage"-crap that independent artists often fall into... Plus it's a nice little resume point (I know it's not a big thing, but it's pretty cool).

(Please do tell me if I'm wrong on any of those fronts)

Entering the competition or making something in LMMS doesn't stop you from entering another competition, or just using it to make money for yourself. Jeez... you could make your own competition around LMMS... it only advertises the product.

(Once again, PLEASE tell me if I'm wrong... I write most of my video game music in LMMS).
